Margaret Smith, 91

Margaret Smith, 91, of Grundy Center, formerly of Dike passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center while under the care of the Cedar Valley Hospice.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. March 10, at Dike United Methodist Church in Dike with Pastor Dan Ridnouer officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. Visitation was March at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. A memorial fund has been established.

Margaret was born on Dec. 3, 1918 to her parents Benjamin and Mabel Bradford. She grew up in Belle Plain and graduated from Belle Plain High School. She was united in marriage to her husband Wallace Smith on July 28, 1940 in Belle Plain. They made their home in Dike in 1942 and proceeded to raise their family there. She was a homemaker and a nurse aid for the Grundy County Memorial Hospital for 20 years. Upon Wallace’s death in 1993, Margaret moved to Grundy Center.

She was a 50-year member of Dike United Methodist Church and a long time member of the Rebekah Lodge in Dike. Margaret enjoyed playing bridge in her local bridge club as well as gardening. She will be missed and long remembered by her friends and family.

Margaret is survived by her daughters, Donna Rust of Grundy Center, Darlene (Joe) Kopplin of Jesup, Dorene (Richard) Whitman of Cathedral City, Calif., and Delores (Gary) Ennenga of Beaman; her 10 grandchildren and 26, great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brother Charles Bradford; husband, Wallace; grandson Andrew Kopplin and son-in-law Ronald Rust.

Richard G. Bryant, 59

Richard “Rick” G. Bryant, 59, passed away in Pensacola, Fla., Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, after a battle with complications from surgery.

Funeral services were held at the Lewis Funeral Home in Navarre, Fla., on Feb. 27. Visitation was held an hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Hospice, 504 N. 12th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504 or to the Arthritis Foundation, 8383 N. Davis Highway, Pensacola, FL 32514. The Lewis Funeral Home was in charge of taking care of Richard’s family.

Rick was born in Marshalltown, to Ginny and Bill Bryant. Rick moved to Fort Walton Beach, Fla. In 1961, with his family and settled in Navarre, Fla. in 1995. He graduated from Choctaw High School in 1969 and attended Oskaloosa Walton Junior College.

He was employed for over 25 years with Preston Hood Chevrolet as a landscaper. He was also involved in his family business, Five Flags Speedway, in Pensacola. Those who knew him and always saw him at the track saw his enthusiasm for racing. He had a winning smile and was willing to help anyone.

Rick leaves behind his mother and father, Ginny and Bill, brothers, Randy (Kay) Bryant, Tim (Pat) Bryant, nephews, Ryan Timmons and Kyle Bryant, niece Brandy (Ben) Wisnewski, also, of Navarre his aunt, Phyllis Simmons, and cousins, Donnie (Nancy) Shollenbarger of Clermont, Fla., and numerous cousins. He also leaves behind numerous friends.
